The effect of approval dependence and empathy on excessive internet use through social benefit among university students

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this research was to examine the relationship between approval dependence, empathy and excessive internet use mediated with social benefit variable. Methods: 284 women and 382 men participated in this study. Participants completed Problematic Internet Use Scale, Scale of Dimensions of Interpersonal Relation-ships and information sheet. Path analysis was utilized to test he hypothesized causal model. Results: The results of the study demonstrated that social benefit mediated the relationship between approval dependence and exces-sive internet use. Also social benefit mediated the relationship between empathy and excessive internet use. Conc-lusion: University students who have higher level of approval dependence and lower level of empathy obtained more social benefit from internet and this lead to increase in excessive internet use

Üniversite öğrencilerinde onay bağımlılığı ve empatinin sosyal fayda aracılığıyla aşırı internet kullanımına etkisi

Ozet
Amaç: Bu araştırmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinde onay bağımlılığı ve empatinin, internetten sosyal fayda sağlama değişkeni aracılığıyla aşırı internet kullanımıyla ilişkisinin incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Araştırmaya 284’ü kız, 382’si erkek olmak üzere 666 üniversite öğrencisi katılmıştır. Araştırma verileri, Problemli İnternet Kullanımı Ölçeği, Kişilerarası İlişki Boyutları Ölçeği ve kişisel bilgi formu ile toplanmıştır. Hipotetik modelin test edilmesinde analizinde yol analizi kullanılmıştır. Bulgular: Yol analizi sonuçları, onay bağımlılığı ile aşırı internet kullanımının sosyal fayda sağlama değişkeni aracılığıyla ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. Araştırmada elde edilen bir diğer bulgu ise empati ile aşırı internet kullanımının sosyal fayda sağlama değişkeni aracılığıyla ilişkili olduğudur. Sonuç: Onay bağımlılığı yüksek olan ve empati düzeyleri düşük olan üniversite öğrencileri internetten daha fazla sosyal fayda sağlamakta, internetten sosyal fayda sağlama da aşırı internet kullanımını artırmaktadır.
